The walk is not just a symbolic gesture but a practical demonstration of the village's stand, aiming to reassure families affected by racism that Meare is a safe community for everyone.

In a strong stand against racism and for community unity, residents of Meare are organising an Inclusion Walk on 14th April at 10 am, starting from the Meare Playing Fields.

The event has garnered the support of notable figures including the Mayor of Glastonbury, Indra Donfrancesco, Liberal Democrat candidate Tessa Munt, and Chris Bennetts, Chair of the Parish Council, alongside numerous councillors.

This initiative is led by Meare Community Strong, a group formed in reaction to recent racist incidents in the village. Their goal is to affirm Meare's commitment to being a welcoming place for all, irrespective of one's background, beliefs, or characteristics. The local primary school has joined the cause, creating a film for World Inclusion Day, further highlighting the community's dedication to inclusivity.

The walk is not just a symbolic gesture but a practical demonstration of the village's stand, aiming to reassure families affected by racism that Meare is a safe community for everyone. It begins at the village playing fields on Muddy Lane and concludes at Moor View Close playground, a location chosen for its proximity to the homes of several impacted families.

Tessa Wills, coordinator of Meare Community Strong, said: "Racism and all forms of hatred are unacceptable in our community. Families in this village felt they were unable to walk safely to or from school because they regularly experienced racist abuse while doing so. One of the aims of this walk is to demonstrate that Meare is a safe place to live, no matter your background or beliefs, and this walk feels like a poignant way to do that."

Annakaye Baker, who has been directly affected by racism in Meare, said: "No one should have to face racism, harassment or hate like my family have. I want everyone to feel safe in their homes, on the walk to school and in the village, which is why it's so good to see everyone coming together for this walk, to show solidarity and strength in our community."

The Meare Village Inclusion Walk will take place on Sunday, 14th April, at 10am, from Meare Village Playing Field on Muddy Lane, BA6 9PU. There is a free car park next to the playing field. The walk will travel down Muddy Lane and across St Mary's Road to Church Path, then along St Mary's Road to Millbatch, ending at the Moor View Close playground, where there will be tea and cakes.

Meare Village Primary School produced a film about inclusion, inspired by the same events and led by children for Anti Racist Day. You can view the film and find out more about the school at https://meareprimary.co.uk.
