On Sunday (May 2), five members of staff from St Dunstan's School ran the 10K Glastonbury Road Run - and they have raised nearly £2,000 in memory of a former student.

They were running for a very special cause - Asthma UK - and for a very special reason - in memory of one of St Dunstan's students, Amy Thomas, who had died from an asthma attack during the October half term holiday in 2017. She was 14 years old and her loss ripped a hole in the heart of the school community.

Amy is always in the thoughts of the staff at St Dunstan's and the memorial garden dedicated to her keeps her memory alive for everyone at the school. St Dunstan's has held several fundraising events for Asthma UK over the last four years.

The staff involved in the road run - teachers Karen Gregory, Jane Manning and Hannah Potter, and support staff Sheri Gerrard and Tracy Mitchell - started to run during lockdown as part of their daily exercise.

Over the months that followed, they teamed up to support each other and completed regular socially-distanced runs which were great for their mental health and well-being as well as allowing them to push themselves to run that little bit further each time.

When the opportunity to run the Glastonbury 10K came up, they decided to challenge themselves and their first thoughts were "who could benefit from us doing this?"

They agreed that they would run for Asthma UK and, with the blessings of Amy's parents, they would run in Amy's name.

And so, the training really began in earnest - a Just Giving page was set up and the word went out.

The team upped their training regime and began to get closer and closer to achieving 10K on a regular basis.

The big day dawned fair with perfect conditions for running - although it was a no spectator event, there were people out and about to cheer Team St Dunstan's on as they ran in their Asthma UK T-shirts sporting blue hearts given by Amy's parents.

All five members of the team completed the run in good time supporting each other the whole time.

It was hoped that the team would raise in the region of £500, but thanks to the generosity of the community, it is currently at £1,875 and rising.
