Ground works have begun at St John's car park, Glastonbury, to install electric vehicle charging points (EVCPs).
Mendip District Council and partners, EB Charging, are installing 43 EVCPs in 13 Council-owned car parks this summer.
It's a milestone moment for Mendip as they make good on their promise to ensure electric charging is more accessible to drivers. It's also an important step in the Council's climate and ecological emergency objectives.
Cllr Simon Carswell, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood Services, said: "It's great to see these works begin. Having this infrastructure in place will be a huge asset for our communities and will encourage the uptake of electric vehicle use in our area, which we know is what our residents have been calling for.
"The programme of works will also future-proof the district and help us reach our climate change goals."
Alex Calnan, Managing Director at EB Charging, said: "We're very happy to be supporting Mendip District Council with its climate emergency strategy. It's great to be breaking ground for the installation of the first of 43 electric vehicle charging points.
"This is a major step that will encourage more residents, businesses and visitors to make the switch to electric vehicles, resulting in cleaner, healthier air for all."
Some minor disruption is expected in the 13 car parks when works take place to install the 22kW Alfen Twin chargers. A full schedule of works is available to view on our website here: www.mendip.gov.uk/article/11013/EVCP-car-park-schedule-of-works, and installation will be completed by the autumn.
A list of locations for the EVCPs is available here: www.mendip.gov.uk/article/10895/Electric-vehicle-EV-charging-points.
