Glastonbury Town Council is on the lookout for a new honorary Macebearer – a voluntary but historic role steeped in tradition and local pride.

The ceremonial post, which dates back centuries, involves carrying the town's ceremonial mace ahead of the Mayor at civic events and supporting the smooth running of processions, formal occasions and full council meetings.

Two Macebearers are appointed each year to act as official attendants to the Mayor, upholding order and protocol while ensuring that events such as Remembrance, civic services, and mayoral engagements run with the dignity and decorum expected of the town's first citizen.

"This is a respected and traditional role with deep roots in Glastonbury's civic life," a spokesperson for the council said. "It requires a calm, courteous, and professional demeanour — and a genuine connection to the community."

Macebearers are provided with a formal robe, gloves and regalia, and receive a small honorarium of £20 per event. Duties can include assisting the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, ensuring processions are correctly formed, supporting church services, and attending public events where the Mayor is present.

Applicants will need to be physically fit enough to take part in parades and events, smart in appearance, and willing to learn civic protocol. While the post is largely ceremonial, the council said it plays a vital role in preserving Glastonbury's unique identity and heritage.

The deadline to apply is 5pm on Wednesday 16 July 2025, with interviews scheduled for Wednesday 23 July if required.

Anyone interested is encouraged to contact Cllr Michael White, Mayor of Glastonbury, for an informal chat about the role via [email protected].

Applications should include a CV and covering letter explaining your suitability and connection to Glastonbury, and can be sent to [email protected] or delivered by hand to Glastonbury Town Council Reception at the Glastonbury Information Centre.
