Street’s Victoria Club bounces back as locals rally to save community hub

The Victoria Sports and Social Club is celebrating a remarkable turnaround after months of uncertainty — and it's all thanks to Street pulling together.
Once worried about survival, the club is now buzzing again with rising membership, packed weekly sessions and a calendar of major community events drawing in the crowds.
Membership has climbed to around 840 across its sections, with nearly 1,000 total affiliations as locals sign up for more than one activity. About 370 people now take part in weekly groups and classes, ranging from cricket and squash to Zumba, camera club and the Community Klub disco for young adults with additional needs. Social membership has jumped to 217, while September will see the launch of new teams, including darts, Tor FC and Street FC Youth.
Flagship events like the Eat & Drink Arts Festival and the annual Flower Show have injected vital footfall and fresh energy into the venue, helping to re-establish it as a hub for sport and local life.
David Redman, speaking for the club, said: "Street has rallied brilliantly. The Club is buzzing, participation is growing, and we're excited for what's next. Thank you to everyone who's joined, volunteered and began to return to the club."
The new trustee team is also working behind the scenes with grant-makers and funding bodies, who are once again recognising the Victoria Club as a community asset worth backing. That momentum, trustees say, will help secure the long-term future of the club for generations to come.
But challenges remain. Urgent repairs — including £8,000 of electrical work and fixing a leaking flat roof — are still hanging over the club, alongside plans to install solar panels to ease soaring energy bills. A GoFundMe has been launched to help tackle the bills, with locals urged to continue their support.
Mr Redman added: "Thank you Street and the surrounding community. We hope to see you all soon."
