Street traffic lights finished as council thanks drivers
By Laura Linham 21st May 2026
Drivers, pedestrians and cyclists in Street have been thanked for their patience after major traffic light works at one of the area's busiest junctions finished on time and on budget.
Somerset Council has completed its scheme to replace six sets of traffic lights on the A39 junction with Clarks Village.
The old lights were more than 30 years old and were nearing the end of their working life.
The work involved significant excavation, with old ducting, wiring and traffic light heads removed from the ground and replaced.
The signals have now been upgraded to modern energy-efficient technology.
The scheme also included surfacing, lining, signage and a new active travel shared-use path.
Councillor Richard Wilkins, Somerset Council's lead member for transport and waste services, said: "All involved in this significant project would like to thank everyone for their support, patience and understanding.
"The work makes sure that there is improved junction performance, long-term reliability across one of the area's busiest routes and much needed safer active travel for pedestrians and cyclists."
