Street residents have just days left to comment on proposals that could bring new 20mph speed limits to a number of roads in the town.

Somerset Council opened a consultation on the proposed Traffic Regulation Order on Wednesday, 5 August, with the objection period due to close on Tuesday, 25 August. The council lists the scheme as covering "Various Roads, Street" and confirms that it is a proposed 20mph speed limit, rather than a restriction which has already been approved.

That leaves residents until next Tuesday to make their views known on the plans. Traffic Regulation Orders, usually known as TROs, are the legal mechanism used by the council to introduce restrictions including speed limits, parking controls and road closures.

The proposal is listed on Somerset Council's Traffic Regulation Orders page, alongside a formal notice and plan showing the proposed changes. The council's main listing does not spell out the individual Street roads affected, instead referring to the scheme collectively as "Various Roads, Street".

Both a proposed TRO notice and a plan have been published by the authority as supporting documents. However, those documents are currently being served through Somerset Council's SharePoint system, meaning the detailed road-by-road plan is not available through the council's main listing itself.

The consultation began on 5 August and remains open until 25 August, giving people affected by the proposal an opportunity to respond before the council decides whether to proceed. The council's TRO database continues to categorise the Street scheme as proposed.

If it goes ahead, the order would add further 20mph restrictions in Street at a time when lower speed limits are increasingly being considered for residential and town roads. For now, though, the signs have not gone up and the decision has not been made — residents still have a few days to get their views in.

Anyone wanting to examine the proposal can visit Somerset Council's Traffic Regulation Orders page and search for "Various Roads, Street".
