The community of Street will come together tomorrow to honour a woman who brought music, knowledge and laughter to generations of children.

Betty Moreby, a committed primary school teacher who dedicated many years of her life to education and music, passed away at her home surrounded by loved ones on July 9th, 2023. She was 91.

As the eldest in a family of five, she will be dearly missed by her surviving sisters, Christine and Rosemary.

Mrs Moreby served at Hindhayes during the late 1960s and early 1970s, before moving to Brookside School. Her passion for teaching and music had a profound impact on her students. Not only did she lead the school choir, but she also orchestrated annual shows and productions, instilling an appreciation for music and performance among her students. If your child ever came home from school brandishing a recorder, the chances are that it was given to them by Mrs Moreby.

Music remained a crucial part of her life even in retirement. Her sister, Christine Mills, reminisced about times spent listening to music recordings from her former pupils at Brookside, showcasing her exceptional skills as a pianist and her deep affection for her students.

Mrs Moreby's warm and generous spirit touched everyone around her. Her husband Brian and daughters Ruth, Rachel and Christina have found solace in the outpouring of fond memories and kind words from the community.

Her three grandchildren, Jasmine, Thomas, and Elliot, who shared her love for music, adored her and were a significant part of her life.

The void left by her passing extends beyond her family to the many students whose lives were shaped by her unwavering dedication to teaching and music.

Mrs Moreby's life will be celebrated at the Mendip Crematorium in Shepton Mallet at 1.30pm tomorrow (Tuesday, July 25th). There is no formal dress code, but attendees are invited to wear something sparkly or in her favourite colours, purple, blue, and fuchsia pink.

Remembered for her dedication to her students, love for music, and generous spirit, Betty Moreby's impact extends beyond her roles as an inspiring teacher and music enthusiast. As a cherished sister, beloved wife, nurturing mother, adored grandmother, and valued community member, her memory will live on.

Her family's sentiment serves as a fitting tribute: "We will miss her dreadfully, but know we were so lucky to have her in our lives for so long."

As the music plays on, so will Mrs Moreby's memory.
