Street Parish Council takes the reins of weekly market

Street Parish Council has officially taken over management of the town's weekly market, marking a significant step in efforts to strengthen local services and reinvigorate the High Street.
From 1st April 2025, the Council assumed responsibility for the popular Thursday market as part of Somerset Council's wider devolution programme, which transfers powers to local authorities to reflect community needs better.
Although a historic market charter doesn't govern Street Market, the Parish Council has exercised its market rights under Part III of the Food Act 1984. The move, agreed in principle in December 2024 and formally approved by Somerset Council in February 2025, follows months of planning and dialogue with traders.
To support the transition, two dedicated Market Officers, Matt and Craig, have been appointed to manage weekly operations and help grow the Market into a sustainable, community-driven service.
"Street Market may be younger than some of its neighbours, but it has a strong identity rooted in quality street food and speciality stalls," said a Council spokesperson. "We're working closely with NABMA (The National Association of British Markets) and traders to refine the current offer and create a long-term vision for its development."
Initial priorities include improved signage to boost visibility and inform drivers of High Street closures on market days.
A formal review of the Market service is scheduled after six months, with the goal of shaping a strategic plan to guide its future growth.
Chair of Street Parish Council, Bryan Knickerbocker, said: "This is a fantastic opportunity to enhance a Market that's part of our High Street's identity. We're excited to work with traders and residents to ensure it thrives for many years to come."
Residents and local businesses are encouraged to share their ideas and feedback as part of an open conversation about the Market's evolution. For more information or to have your say, contact the Clerk of Street Parish Council.
