Street Parish Council is contemplating a proposal to take over the management of the Woods Batch and Farm Road underpasses.

This consideration comes in response to concerns raised by a community petition, 'Implement Safety Measures at Woods Batch Park/Underpass', highlighting the need for action against crime and anti-social behaviour in these areas.

Recent incidents of crime and anti-social behaviour in the area reached a peak at the end of November last year, when groups of youths in the Woods Batch underpass demanded belongings from teenagers and children, leading to assaults and minor injuries.

In another incident, three balaclava-clad youths attacked a teenager, resulting in hospitalisation for head injuries and a dislocated shoulder.

A petition, set up by local residents called for a concerted effort between the Council, police, and other stakeholders to implement measures to improve the situation.

These include cleaning up graffiti, ensuring regular maintenance, increasing security patrols, and the potential installation of CCTV.

In a recent meeting, the Council discussed the proposal to take over the underpasses from Somerset Council.

If they go ahead with the plans, it would place the responsibility for these areas' maintenance, cleanliness, and general upkeep in the hands of the Parish Council.
