Major roadworks set for early 2026 in Street will replace aging traffic signals at the A39 junction near Clarks Village.

Major roadworks will hit the heart of Street in early 2026 — with Somerset Council replacing six traffic signal sets at the A39 junction by Clarks Village.

The 30-year-old lights will be torn out and replaced as part of a county-wide upgrade. Work starts Monday, 5 January and is due to last until May. Temporary intelligent lights will manage traffic, but overnight closures are expected later for resurfacing.

Crews will dig up and remove the full system — wiring, ducting and signal heads — before laying fresh surfaces from Westway Roundabout to Street Roundabout. A new shared-use path for cyclists and pedestrians is also being installed.

A public drop-in to explain the project will be held at Clarks Village Conference Centre on Tuesday, 9 December, from 3.30pm to 7pm.

Councillor Richard Wilkins said: "These are very busy junctions. This work will replace end-of-life equipment and keep the signals fit for the next 30 years. We know there'll be disruption — especially at peak times — and we're working hard to minimise that."
