St John Ambulance Appeals for Adult Youth Team Volunteers in Somerset
By Laura Linham 26th May 2026
St John Ambulance is calling on adults across Somerset to help inspire and support the next generation of lifesavers by volunteering with its Youth Team. Vacancies are currently available for Youth Leaders and Youth Helpers in Shepton Mallet, with further opportunities in Yeovil, Wells, Street and Glastonbury.
As the nation's leading first aid and health response charity, St John Ambulance plays a vital role in communities across the country. Locally, its youth units provide young people with practical first aid skills alongside opportunities to build confidence, leadership, teamwork and resilience. With growing demand in our youth programmes, several Somerset-based Groups are now seeking additional volunteers to help continue and expand this important work.
Volunteers work with Badgers (aged 5–11) and Cadets (aged 10–17), delivering engaging, weekly sessions in a safe and supportive environment. No previous experience is necessary – just enthusiasm, reliability and a willingness to make a positive difference. Full training and ongoing support are provided, including first aid and safeguarding qualifications, as well as development opportunities and benefits such as access to the Blue Light Card.
There is also an opportunity for those who wish to take on more responsibility to become a Youth Group Lead. This role involves coordinating programme delivery and ensuring the effective supervision and wellbeing of Cadets and youth volunteers.
While the Youth Team provides young people with invaluable life skills, the benefits of volunteering are not one-sided. Youth Team volunteers frequently say that they also learn a great deal from the young people they support. Working alongside Badgers and Cadets offers fresh perspectives, new ideas and a deeper understanding of the challenges and aspirations facing young people today.
Volunteers also develop their own communication, leadership and mentoring skills, while gaining confidence in guiding and supporting others. Many say the experience helps them grow personally and professionally.
Michael Fenn, Youth Leader at Yeovil Cadets, speaking about his experience volunteering with the charities young people, said: "I enjoy watching young people gain skills and confidence - it's always incredible seeing cadets out and about at events, delivering professional treatment to the public and representing the best of St John".
