More than a meal: Street’s SEND supper gives families room to breathe
By Laura Linham 13th Oct 2026
The Loft in Street is welcoming families to its next SEND supper on Tuesday, 17 November, offering an evening out with people who understand that dinner doesn't look the same for everyone.
For parents and carers of children with special educational needs and disabilities, booking a restaurant can take some courage. Even when the menu looks right and the ear defenders are packed, there can be a nagging worry about how the evening will go — and how other diners will react if things become difficult.
It can be easier to stay home. But that means missing out on time together somewhere different, a meal someone else has cooked and the pleasure of getting out of the house as a family.
The Loft's SEND supper makes room for families who might otherwise feel a restaurant isn't somewhere they can comfortably go. The venue is reserved for SEND families, with a quiet area, soft play and the option to pre-order food to help take some of the uncertainty out of the evening.
Children are welcome to bring their tablets, headphones and sensory devices. Parents don't have to worry about defending the things that help their child feel comfortable.
Owner Mark Tobin said: "We know that for many families with SEN children, eating out just isn't an option — whether it's fear of judgment, meltdowns over unfamiliar food, or the pressure of sitting still. This evening is different. It's just SEND families. Tablets are fine. Stimming is welcome. Noise is OK. And nobody has to apologise for being themselves."
Being able to pre-order can spare a child an anxious wait for something familiar to eat. Having somewhere to take a break means they have an option when the room feels too much.
For parents, knowing those arrangements are there can make it easier to walk through the door. So can knowing that the people at the next table may have arrived with many of the same worries.
One parent described the supper as "an absolutely amazing chance for us parents/family to enjoy an amazing meal filled with a room of adults, all in similar boats, just trying to stay afloat."
She added: "We've found it a lifeline, a chance to feel like a 'normal' family, able to go out and enjoy a yummy meal."
Families who spend much of their time explaining their children's needs deserve an evening when they can settle in, order something they fancy and enjoy being together.
There is no single way a child has to enjoy the supper. They might want to play, sit with a tablet or take some time away from the table, and the evening is organised with that in mind.
If you would like to come but are unsure whether it will work for your family, you can speak to Mark before booking. Letting the team know about food preferences or anything that could make the visit easier gives you a chance to talk it through before you arrive.
