Glastonbury Abbey to shut on Mondays over winter to cut costs

Trustees announce temporary closure to tackle rising costs and allow time to review future operations

Glastonbury Abbey will close every Monday over winter in a bid to manage rising costs and protect its long-term future, the charity has announced.

From Monday, 3 November 2025, to Monday, 16 February 2026, the abbey will not open on Mondays. Regular winter hours — 10 am to 4 pm, Tuesday to Sunday — remain unchanged.

Trustees said the decision was "temporary" and confirmed the site will reopen seven days a week from Monday, 23 February 2026.

David Odgers, chair of trustees, said: "Like many other heritage sites Glastonbury Abbey is facing challenging times with the impact of increases in costs and employer national insurance and visitors generally spending less.

"As a result, we have made the difficult decision to close the site on Mondays to visitors and members for a limited period from 3rd November till 16th February.

"We appreciate that this will be disappointing to visitors and Members whose support for the abbey is so much appreciated.

"We regret the inconvenience caused but trust you will understand that the temporary restriction on opening hours will give the management team some space to identify how we can work to reinvigorate the offering to visitors, to seek efficiencies and generally to be more effective in all that we do."

The abbey remains one of Glastonbury's most popular visitor attractions, with income from tickets, donations and membership vital to ongoing conservation and grounds maintenance.
