Smiles, stories and standout behaviour at West Pennard Primary

Ofsted inspectors have praised West Pennard Church of England Primary School for its "exceptionally polite and well-mannered" pupils and "outstanding" personal development in its latest inspection.
The school, based just outside Glastonbury, received top marks for behaviour and attitudes, and personal development, with inspectors noting that pupils "demonstrate high levels of respect and kindness towards one another" and that "staff know and understand pupils' needs well."
Inspectors visited the school on 25 and 26 February and found a happy, inclusive atmosphere where, in the words of the pupils themselves, there are "always smiley pupils and smiley staff."
The quality of education, leadership and management, and early years provision were all judged to be good. While the report no longer provides an overall grade under the updated inspection framework, the findings show the school continues to maintain high standards since its last full inspection in 2014.
Inspectors said the school's mission to "develop pupils as responsible citizens" was clearly evident. The school offers a rich programme of activities including music, dance, sport and residential trips. Pupils relish taking on leadership roles such as house captains and playground leaders, and they "learn how to become thoughtful and caring young people who respect and appreciate the diversity of the world in which they live."
The school's curriculum was praised for being "ambitious," with clearly identified knowledge, skills and vocabulary across all subjects. In most areas, teachers were seen to check understanding well and help pupils build on prior learning. However, inspectors noted that assessment in a few subjects needed improvement, stating: "In these subjects, the checks on pupils' understanding do not provide teachers with the information they need about gaps or misconceptions in pupils' knowledge."
The school's commitment to reading also stood out, with children beginning their reading journey "from the moment they start in the early years." Teachers are said to be "skilled in the teaching of phonics," and story time is a "firm favourite" among pupils.
Provision for children in the early years was also recognised as strong. Inspectors said, "Children settle quickly. They rapidly learn the behaviours expected of them. This means children are well prepared for Year 1."
The school's support for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) was commended. The report stated that "pupils with SEND receive the right support" and that the school uses expert advice from outside agencies when needed.
Staff morale was high, with inspectors noting that "staff are extremely proud to work at the school" and "feel valued and respected." The governing body was also praised for holding the school to account and having a detailed understanding of its work.
In a letter announcing the results of the inspection to parents, headteacher Tony Wheat wrote: " I'd like to express my great thanks to the pupils, staff, governors, members of the wider community and yourselves for making West Pennard School such a special place in which to learn and grow together."
