Shoes, shifts and a frankly heroic number of lorries: 28 local jobs up for grabs
By Laura Linham 10th Jul 2026
Whether you are actively looking for work, idly checking what else is out there, or reading job adverts because your current workplace has introduced another "quick catch-up", there is a sizeable crop of vacancies across Glastonbury, Street, Wells, Shepton Mallet and the surrounding villages this week.
There are 28 roles altogether, ranging from senior finance and legal work to care shifts, laboratory testing, retail merchandising and enough driving vacancies to keep the A371 busy for the foreseeable future.
Office life, spreadsheets and the Clarks empire
Clarks in Street is recruiting a Learning and Development Specialist. The role involves designing and delivering training across the company's retail, corporate and distribution teams, working closely with the Global Head of Learning and Development. It is one for somebody who can help colleagues learn new things without simply emailing them a presentation entitled "Mandatory Training Final FINAL v6".
The company also needs a field-based Visual Merchandising Executive. The job covers stores across the UK and Ireland and involves planning, delivering and communicating the company's visual-merchandising standards. Applicants should presumably be able to look at a shelf of shoes and know instantly that the desert boots need moving slightly to the left.
There is also a Supply Chain Transportation Manager vacancy at the Street distribution centre. This onsite role carries responsibility for UK and European transport operations, making it suitable for somebody whose organisational skills extend beyond leaving things beside the front door and hoping they remember them later.
For those who prefer figures to freight, Clarks is advertising for a Senior Manager in Management Accounting. It is a senior finance position within the global company, involving business planning, change and, one assumes, spreadsheets with enough tabs to require their own contents page.
In Wells, a regional law firm is looking for an Agriculture and Rural Property Paralegal. The salary is listed at up to around £26,000 plus benefits. The successful applicant will join an established rural-property team, dealing with the sort of land and boundary matters that can turn a quiet Somerset conversation surprisingly lively.
Retail, spectacles and making things look presentable
A Merchandiser is wanted in Glastonbury on a flexible, part-time, zero-hours contract. The rate is £14.24 an hour including holiday pay, while eligible travel time and mileage are also covered. A full driving licence and access to a vehicle are required, because transporting display materials around town by bus would test anybody's commitment.
Asda in Street is seeking a qualified Dispensing Optician Manager. The role includes leading the optical team, overseeing clinics, managing compliance and helping customers find suitable glasses without pushing unnecessary extras. Applicants must be registered with the General Optical Council, and the rota includes weekday and Saturday shifts from 8am to 6pm.
Care work in Wells
Crandon Springs Care Home in Wells is looking for a part-time Admin Assistant. The position is for 22.5 hours across three days and includes every other weekend. Duties cover reception, phone calls, filing, finance and recruitment support, meeting visitors and showing prospective residents and their families around. Essentially, you will be expected to know what is happening even when nobody else does.
The home is also recruiting a Bank Care Assistant. Hours will vary according to cover requirements, including staff sickness and annual leave. Previous experience caring for older people is requested, while training and development are provided.
A Senior Carer is needed at a residential care home in Wells. Applicants should hold an NVQ Level 3 or Advanced Diploma in Health and Social Care and have previous residential-care and team-leadership experience. Duties include administering medication, updating care plans and risk assessments, liaising with families and healthcare professionals and leading staff during shifts.
There are also two separately advertised night care roles at Crandon Springs: one Night Care Assistant vacancy and a second Night Care Assistant vacancy. Both listings describe night shifts from 8pm to 8am, four nights a week, including alternate weekends. The work involves assisting residents with daily living, meals, care plans and companionship. It calls for patience, compassion and a body clock willing to enter negotiations.
Laboratories, production lines and things requiring proper attention
Quality Milk Management Services, a family-run business based near Wells, is advertising for a full-time Laboratory Technician or Assistant. The company provides milk-recording, laboratory and consultancy services to the dairy industry. It wants somebody able to take ownership of their work, keep accurate records and resist making the same joke about spilt milk before 9am.
Mars in Castle Cary has a Process Operator vacancy paying between £29,400 and £31,200, including shift allowance and depending on experience. The 37.5-hour week rotates between 6am to 2pm, 2pm to 10pm and 10pm to 6am shifts. The role involves operating machinery, handling materials, keeping production records and maintaining safety and quality standards. Benefits include healthcare, pension contributions, parking, hot drinks, fruit and access to the employee shop, which may be the line most applicants read twice.
Holcim is looking for a Weighbridge Coordinator in Shepton Mallet. The company supplies construction materials, and the role is likely to involve coordinating vehicles, loads and paperwork without allowing any of the three to disappear at an inconvenient moment.
Experienced plant operators can apply for a Dozer Driver position in the Shepton Mallet area. Ongoing work is available with a national aggregates supplier, with immediate starts advertised. Applicants need a valid CPCS or NPORS card carrying the CSCS logo, relevant experience and full personal protective equipment.
Blinds, curtains and walls that are never quite straight
Hillarys is advertising a flexible Blinds and Curtains Installer opportunity in Street. The work can be full or part-time and is offered on a self-employed basis, allowing installers to arrange appointments around their other commitments. It could suit somebody practical, personable and tactful enough not to comment on the customer's previous curtain choices.
There is also an Installer vacancy around Wells, again offering flexible full or part-time self-employed work through Hillarys.
A second Blinds and Curtains Installer listing is available in Wells. Earnings depend on the appointments and work completed, with the role aimed at people who want to work locally and manage their own diary. Familiarity with tape measures and the phrase "old houses are like that" will probably prove useful.
Lorries, depots and life on the road
Shepton Mallet has no shortage of driving work this week. Gregory Distribution is recruiting a Class 1 Trunk Driver for Monday-to-Friday night shifts starting at 7pm. The salary is £49,240 a year, making this proper night work rather than simply staying late because somebody booked a meeting for 4.45pm.
Blue Arrow is advertising for Class 1 C+E Drivers, with rates between £16.50 and £21 an hour and immediate starts available. The advert refers both to the Shepton Mallet area and a Bristol logistics site, so applicants should confirm exactly where they will be expected to turn up before polishing the cab.
Another HGV Class 1 Driver role offers immediate day or night starts in Shepton Mallet. Weekday day shifts pay £16.50 an hour, while weekday nights pay £17.50, with holiday pay paid separately.
There is a permanent HGV Class 2 Driver position supporting several logistics and distribution clients. The listing promises ongoing work, competitive rates and varied assignments, which should at least prevent anybody developing a lasting grudge against the same loading bay.
Pure Staff is also recruiting an HGV Class 2 Driver for an immediate start in Shepton Mallet. The weekday day rate is listed at £16.50 an hour.
At Evercreech, an HGV Class 2 Waste and Recycling Driver is required on a Monday-to-Friday pattern. Newly qualified drivers are welcome, and the advert mentions an immediate start and a signing-on bonus following the qualifying period. It is essential work, although calling your first week "rubbish" may create avoidable confusion.
A further HGV Class 2 Driver vacancy is being advertised from the Evercreech depot, with day rates beginning at £16 an hour. Applicants should check the full shift and pay arrangements before applying.
Supporting young people and older neighbours
A Day Care Host is needed in Shepton Mallet and the surrounding area. Hosts welcome small groups of older people into their own homes for up to two full days a week, providing company and a socially interactive friendship group. The role needs compassion, flexibility and a living room in which four guests can sit down without first relocating a month's worth of laundry.
An SEMH Support Worker role is also listed under Bruton. It involves supporting young people with social, emotional and mental-health needs in a school setting, either one-to-one or in small groups. Applicants should have relevant support experience, strong communication skills and a calm approach to challenging situations. The advert also mentions locations across Dorset, so it would be wise to confirm the actual placement before plotting the morning commute.
That makes 28 roles altogether, covering everything from senior management and laboratory work to care shifts, curtains and an impressive quantity of commercial driving.
More vacancies are added throughout the week, so take a look at the jobs boards on Glastonbury, Wells and Shepton Mallet Nub News before somebody else finds the one with sensible hours, decent pay and parking that does not require a three-point turn between two wheelie bins.
