Sharp rise in crime hits Street: Anti-social behaviour and violent crime on the up

Street recorded a sharp rise in crime in March 2024, with total incidents increasing to 97, up from 67 in February.

Significant rises in violent crimes and anti-social behaviour categories mark this increase.

Detailed Analysis of Crime Categories:

  • Anti-social Behaviour: More than doubled, with incidents rising from 8 in February to 17 in March. This category includes behaviours that distress or inconvenience the general public.
  • Burglary: Remained stable with 2 incidents reported in both months.
  • Criminal Damage and Arson: Increased slightly from 6 incidents in February to 8 in March, involving property damage and deliberate fire-setting.
  • Drugs: Remained constant with 1 incident reported each month.
  • Other Theft: Saw a decrease from 9 incidents in February to 4 in March. This category covers theft not specified under shoplifting or vehicle crime.
  • Public Order: Remained steady at 7 incidents. Public order offences include acts that disrupt the peace or create fear among the public.
  • Shoplifting: Doubled, with incidents increasing from 7 in February to 14 in March, reflecting a growing concern for local retailers.
  • Vehicle Crime: Stayed consistent with 2 incidents each month.
  • Violent Crime: Saw a substantial rise from 24 cases in February to 37 in March. This category includes crimes where individuals are harmed or threatened with harm.
  • Other Crime: Increased from 0 to 5 incidents, including crimes not categorized elsewhere.

A police spokesperson said: "Our officers are implementing targeted measures to address these issues, and we urge the community to assist us by reporting any suspicious activities. Working together, we can help ensure the safety and security of Street."

Local authorities emphasise the importance of community involvement and proactive measures to help combat the rising crime rate. Residents are encouraged to participate in neighbourhood watch programs and remain vigilant.
