Plans to turn Globe Inn at Glastonbury into education centre and chapel are withdrawn
The future of a former pub in Glastonbury is uncertain after a planning application to turn it into an education centre and chapel has been withdrawn.
The application for the change of use from public house (use Class A4) to mixed use of educational centre and chapel (D1), shop (A1) and cafe (A3) and to build a single-storey extension with associated works at the Globe Inn, The Armoury, Magdalene Street, Glastonbury, had been made by Annabel Du Boulay.
The Globe Inn closed about four years ago, and the applicant had been in the process of buying the property, subject to planning approval.
However, she has now withdrawn the plans, throwing the future of this former town pub, which is situated next to Abbey Park, in doubt.
The application had been to renovate and convert the pub into an education centre being run by the applicant's business, the Glastonbury Gnostic Centre and Rose Chapel.
The pub's skittle alley was to be converted into the chapel, and the site would also house a cafe and shop.
Six jobs - four full-time and two part-time - would have been created at the site if the plans had gone through, including receptionists, retail assistants and chefs.
The plans were also to use the site as a new performance venue in the town, especially catering for classical concerts, choirs and speakers.
The application said: "The applicant's company has a strong emphasis on social responsibility and will support the local community, especially vulnerable people, for example by offering full disabled access and a dementia-friendly environment."
