Plans submitted for 48 homes beside the A39 on Street’s western edge

Plans for 48 homes beside the A39 on Street's western edge have been submitted to Somerset Council.
Bloor Homes South West wants to build on two agricultural fields south of Quarry Batch, between the main road and Brooks Road. Although next to Street, the site lies within Walton parish.
The application follows a public consultation held between mid-August and early September.
Seventeen of the proposed homes would be affordable, accounting for around 35 per cent of the development. That is above the 30 per cent normally required for schemes of ten or more homes in the former Mendip area.
Vehicles would enter and leave through a single access onto Quarry Batch, while pedestrians would have a separate connection to Brooks Road.
The plans include 92 allocated parking spaces, seven visitor spaces and public open space near the entrance and eastern boundary.
A shared pedestrian and cycle path would run east from the entrance to the traffic lights at West End. This would connect residents with existing routes along the A39 towards Clarks Village and Glastonbury.
The site is a short walk from Street's skatepark and business park, including Lidl, Sainsbury's, McDonald's and other shops.
A spokesperson for planning consultancy Turley, representing Bloor Homes, said: "The proposal is located within a planned and sustainable location for residential development.
"Its position within a wider allocation provides opportunities for residents to access the established services, facilities, employment opportunities and public transport connections available within Street by walking, cycling and public transport.
"The proposed access, pedestrian connections, infrastructure and open space framework have been designed with the future development of the wider allocation in mind.
"The proposal provides an appropriate scale, massing, form and layout, including two-storey dwellings, and establishes a high-quality and appropriately defined gateway to the wider allocation."
The fields form part of the Street Future Growth Area in the Mendip Local Plan Part II, which envisages up to 400 homes between the A39 and Higher Brooks.
Bloor's layout allows the estate road to be extended south to connect with other parts of that allocation as they are developed.
A separate application for 160 homes on Higher Brooks, at the southern end of the growth area, went before Somerset Council's Planning Committee East on Tuesday, 6 October. Councillors deferred a decision.
The Quarry Batch application is expected to be determined within the next six months. It is not yet clear whether it will go before the committee or be decided by planning officers under delegated powers.
