A disued skittle alley at a pub in Street could be knocked down and two bungalows built in its place, if the application is approved by Mendip District Council.

Plans have been submitted which would see the King Alfred on Leigh Road lose its redundant skittle alley, and have the outdoor space redeveloped to accommodate two semi-detached chalet-style bungalows.

In the application, Stephen Radford - Head of Estates at Punch Pubs & Co, which owns the pub, said: "We do not envisage that the development will detract from the operation of the pub. The proposals involve demolishing the disused skittle alley which has remained obsolete for many years, and there will only be a minor loss in outdoor drinking space. Punch are committed to reinvesting a proportion of proceeds from the development back into the business to provide an upgraded outdoor drinking area. This will ensure that the pub can continue to deliver a high quality offering for many years to come.

"The negligible reduction in car parking spaces is considered adequate to ensure the business remains both sustainable and appealing to the community. Punch wholeheartedly support the application and would not do so if it was considered that the pubs viability would be impacted. As owners of the King Alfred, we are well placed to comment on this application, and we feel that the loss of this space is not fundamental to the pub as a business."
