Glastonbury pizza lovers will soon be able to enjoy a slice of Papa John's if new plans are approved.

The pizza company – which already has branches in Bridgwater, Taunton and Yeovil – has applied to set up a new branch in the former William Hill bookmakers at 17 Market Place.

The company believes the new outlet could provide up to 20 full-time jobs for Glastonbury residents and would compliment existing businesses in the town centre.

Mendip District Council is expected to make a decision on the plans before the end of the year.

The proposed branch lies opposite Glastonbury's historic Market Cross, a short distance from the King William Inn.

The branch is also within walking distance of both the town's abbey and information centre – both of which will be regenerated as part of the £23.6 million town deal.

If approved, the branch will be open from 11am to 11pm every day, including Sundays and bank holidays, with up to 20 full-time jobs being created.

Keith Mellor of Tetra Tech Planning (representing Papa John's) described the site as "a sustainable location" and said a pizza takeaway outlet was in keeping with other businesses in that part of the town centre.

He said: "The unit is located within a central area of the centre in which uses are varied and mixed, including traditional retailers – cafés, charity shops, public houses, hot food takeaways or restaurants, curiosity shops and hair salons.

"The proposal would make a positive contribution to vitality and viability, and would not result in harm to the character of the conservation area or nearby grade two listed buildings.

"The introduction of Papa John's into the unit would re-occupy a vacant building, provide local employment opportunities, meet a local need, and as such will increase pedestrian footfall within the locale."

Papa John's estimates the premises will receive three deliveries by lorry each week – two from the company's central food supplier, and one from its main drinks partner Coca Cola.
