Nine Somerset jobs worth updating your CV for this week
By Laura Linham 31st Jul 2026
If Sunday evening is starting to feel like a weekly warning siren, it might be time to see what else is out there.
This week's vacancies include jobs in engineering, healthcare, hospitality, retail and support services. There are full-time and part-time positions, salaries ranging from £25,000 to more than £50,000, and even one employer offering a £2,500 welcome bonus.
Here are nine local jobs that could give your CV something to do.
Help keep vital services running
Alongside, formerly Julian House, needs a Service Manager for its MOTS and SHAP services in Shepton Mallet.
The permanent position pays £34,505 a year for 37.5 hours a week. You will manage services supporting people experiencing homelessness and social exclusion, including Mendip Off The Streets and the Single Homelessness Accommodation Programme.
Applicants need management experience in homelessness, housing, social care or a related service. There is an out-of-hours rota, and you will need a driving licence and access to a vehicle. This is certainly not a role for anyone hoping to spend the day hiding behind a strategically placed clipboard.
Take charge of an opticians
In Street, a Dispensing Optician Manager is wanted to oversee an opticians department.
The job involves managing optometrists and optical assistants, monitoring performance and compliance, and ensuring customers receive the right clinical care.
Applicants must be qualified dispensing opticians registered with the General Optical Council. Leadership skills are required too, because apparently simply asking everyone to "crack on" does not count as a management strategy.
Help customers see and hear clearly
Leightons is looking for a part-time Optical and Hearing Assistant in Burnham-on-Sea.
The role pays the full-time equivalent of £25,348, plus a bonus, and covers three days each week.
Previous retail or hospitality experience would be useful, but full training will be provided. The job involves helping customers with eyewear and hearing care, offering considerably more job satisfaction than explaining for the 14th time that an item is not reduced just because it was left near the sale rail.
Keep the Mars factory moving
Mars Petcare has a vacancy for a Multi-Skilled Engineer at its Castle Cary manufacturing site.
The 32-hour-a-week role pays between £45,000 and £50,600, including a shift allowance. There is also a £2,500 welcome bonus, which is a stronger opening gesture than the usual branded pen and slightly awkward induction lunch.
You will carry out planned maintenance and respond to machinery breakdowns across the production and packaging lines.
Applicants need a mechanical or electrical engineering qualification and experience in a manufacturing or production environment.
Join the Whitnell Corner road scheme
A highways contractor is recruiting groundworkers and plant operators for the Whitnell Corner improvement scheme near Wells.
The 12-month contracts pay between £20 and £23 an hour, depending on the role. Vacancies include groundworker, dumper operator, roller operator and 360 excavator operator positions.
Immediate starts are available. Previous highways or civil engineering experience is required, along with the relevant CPCS, NPORS or CSCS qualifications.
It is a chance to help build the roundabout rather than sitting in traffic nearby and offering your own unpaid project-management advice.
Run the café at Wells Cathedral
Wells Cathedral is seeking a Temporary Café Supervisor.
The job involves supervising the café team and supporting its daily operation. Benefits include a pension, staff discount and free parking — the latter being no small matter in the centre of Wells.
Applicants should be organised, comfortable working with the public and able to keep things moving when several people simultaneously decide they need tea.
Step up in retail
Cardzone is recruiting a Retail Supervisor in Street.
The successful applicant will help open and close the shop, handle cash and support the day-to-day running of the store.
Retail experience will be useful, along with the ability to stay calm when somebody arrives two minutes before closing and announces that they are "just browsing".
Get to work in a Glastonbury kitchen
Wick Hollow Limited has a vacancy for a Kitchen Hand and Cook in Glastonbury.
The job covers kitchen duties and some front-of-house work, so flexibility will be useful. Benefits include staff discounts, discounted food and a company pension.
It could suit somebody happy to get stuck in and unconcerned by the fact that café customers can apparently sense the precise moment the kitchen is trying to tidy up.
Help keep a vehicle fleet on the road
EMED Group is looking for a part-time Fleet Assistant in Shepton Mallet.
The position is for 30 hours a week and involves helping to keep the company's vehicles organised and available for use.
Applicants need a full manual UK driving licence with fewer than six penalty points. Benefits include a pension, sick pay, an employee assistance programme and a referral scheme.
