A bank in Street is set to close its doors for the last time in the summer.
Natwest Bank has confirmed that several of its banks are scheduled to close due to changing customer habits, with some now serving fewer than 250 customers a week. The company's branch in Street is set to close its doors as part of the changes, with the closure is due to take place on July 19th, 2023.
The closure will mean that the nearest open Natwest branch will be in Wells, and the only remaining bank branch in Street will be Lloyds TSB.
Announcing the closures, the bank said the number of people visiting physical branches has fallen since 2019, with the average number of both business and personal counter transactions reduced by 64% between January 2019 and January 2022 at the Street branch.
A NatWest spokesperson said: "As with many industries, most of our customers are shifting to mobile and online banking, because it's faster and easier for people to manage their financial lives. We understand and recognise that digital solutions aren't right for everyone or every situation, and that when we close branches we have to make sure that no one is left behind.
"We take our responsibility seriously to support the people who face challenges in moving online, so we are investing to provide them with support and alternatives that work for them."
"We know it can affect people who are less confident with the alternatives we offer, and we'll always work hard to guide you through the changes and find the best way to serve you from now on."
Consumer guide Which? suggests banks and building societies have closed, or have scheduled to close, a total of 5,355 branches since January 2015. This works out at around 54 branches each month - and there are more coming this year.
