Mystery in the High Street: Glastonbury’s Cardboard Box Man becomes a local legend
In a town renowned for its eccentricity and spiritual energy, Glastonbury's latest local celebrity has arrived in the most unexpected form—a man wrapped in cardboard boxes.
Known simply as Cardboard Box Man, this enigmatic figure has captured the hearts of locals and visitors alike, bringing an air of mystery, creativity, and curiosity to the community.
Dressed in what he calls his "regenerative cardboard form," Cardboard Box Man says he woke up in a Glastonbury dumpster, the latest stop on a life of mysterious relocations. "I sleep in a dumpster, and then I wake up somewhere new," he explains. "But Glastonbury is different. Here, people see me. They talk to me. They make me feel loved."
For years, Cardboard Box Man wandered unnoticed in other towns, often ignored or dismissed. In Glastonbury, however, he has found a community that not only acknowledges his unique presence but celebrates it.
Cardboard Box Man's story is both whimsical and cryptic. He believes he is part of a larger mission, guided by a mysterious "cube in the sky" that occasionally appears during his travels. The cube, he says, is responsible for transporting him from place to place and may also be the source of his oracle powers.
"I've seen the cube a few times," he shares. "It floats in the sky, comes closer, and then there's a bright light—and suddenly, I'm somewhere else. I think it gives me messages to deliver, but I'm still trying to figure it all out."
Using these supposed powers, Cardboard Box Man offers oracle readings on Glastonbury's High Street or during town events like the Frost Fair. With a deck of trading cards in hand, he invites people to swirl their hands over the cards, pick one, and receive a unique message. "People seem to really connect with the readings," he says. "Sometimes, it feels like the messages are exactly what they need to hear. It's a special way for me to connect with others."
Since arriving in Glastonbury, Cardboard Box Man has found himself embraced by the town's welcoming community. Children flock to him for photos, adults seek his readings, and many are simply curious about his story. "The people here are different," he says. "They come to Glastonbury for a purpose—for spiritual awakenings or to live out their dreams. That energy makes it a special place, and I feel like I belong here."
Even the challenges of his unconventional existence—like getting soggy in the rain—are softened by the kindness of Glastonbury's residents. "Rain is tough on me," he admits. "It makes my boxes soggy, and it's hard to recover. But people here are so kind. They talk to me, hug me, and sometimes even invite me into their homes. It's beautiful."
Cardboard Box Man has also made many friends in Glastonbury, from local performers to shop owners and musicians. "There's a man named Cass who plays music on the streets," he says. "I love hanging out with him. The people here inspire me."
While his origins remain a mystery, Cardboard Box Man's presence in Glastonbury seems to align perfectly with the town's reputation as a haven for the unconventional and the extraordinary. "People come to Glastonbury to awaken something within themselves," he says. "They come here to find a dream, a message, or a community. I think that's why they've embraced me. I represent something different, something they're open to seeing."
He also sees his time in Glastonbury as part of a larger journey. "I think I'll be shipped off again soon," he says, referencing the mysterious cube that guides his travels. "But I hope I'll return here one day. There's something special about this place, and I feel a connection to it."
Despite the love he has received, being Cardboard Box Man is not without its challenges. From standing in the rain to navigating the streets with a shopping cart full of supplies, he faces daily obstacles. "The hardest part is figuring out who I am," he admits. "I'm just as much a mystery to myself as I am to others. But being here, being seen—it's helped me feel more connected to myself and my purpose."
As word spreads, Cardboard Box Man has become something of a local legend, with people speculating about his origins and purpose. "Some people even ask if I'm Banksy," he says with a laugh.
Is he Banksy? "I don't know," he laughs.
Whether he is reading cards, dancing at a local event, or simply wandering the streets, Cardboard Box Man has become a symbol of Glastonbury's openness, creativity, and community spirit. For those curious to meet him, he can often be found near Glastonbury's High Street, ready to share a smile, a story, or an oracle reading. "I just want to connect with people," he says. "To talk, to laugh, and to remind them that there's magic in the unexpected."
As for the future, Cardboard Box Man remains open to whatever comes next. "I don't know where I'll go, but I think I'll be back here," he says. "Glastonbury has changed me, and I hope I've made an impact here too."
Wherever his journey leads, one thing is certain: Cardboard Box Man has left an indelible mark on Glastonbury, proving that even the most unexpected characters can find a home in this extraordinary town.
