MP waves wand for Merlin as Parliament pays tribute to local legend

Glastonbury's legendary wizard, Ray 'Merlin' Rutter, has been honoured in Parliament following his passing at the age of 77 – with local MP Sarah Dyke ensuring his magic lives on.
Merlin, instantly recognisable in his flowing blue robes and wizard's hat, was a beloved fixture in Glastonbury, delighting locals and tourists alike with his rune readings outside Glastonbury Abbey. But beyond the mystical persona, he was a dedicated volunteer and a force for good in the community.
His tireless work with the Love Glastonbury Community Fridge saw him help redistribute fresh food to those in need, tackling food poverty while reducing food waste—proving he was just as much of a hero in real life as he was in legend.
His impact on the town was so significant that Liberal Democrat MP for Glastonbury and Somerton, Sarah Dyke, has tabled an Early Day Motion (EDM) in the House of Commons to ensure Merlin's contribution is formally recognised at the highest level.
Ms Dyke said: "Merlin was a true embodiment of Glastonbury's spirit," Dyke said. "His warmth, kindness, and passion for bringing people together will be deeply missed. He wasn't just a beloved local figure, but a champion for those in need, dedicating his time to initiatives that made a real difference. I wanted to make sure his legacy is remembered and celebrated in Parliament."
The motion, which has already gained cross-party support, celebrates Merlin's role in shaping the town's unique identity and ensuring that Glastonbury remains a place of community, magic, and inclusivity.
Merlin's absence will undoubtedly be felt in the town, but thanks to this tribute, his memory will live on—not just in Glastonbury's streets but now in the records of Westminster too.
