Moves have already been made to start work on two of the Glastonbury Town Deal projects.
Less than two weeks after the government approved the funding for the 11 Town Deal projects, Mendip District Council has received planning applications relating to two of the schemes.
An application has been submitted to convert two of the buildings that were once the Bailys Leather Works, but are now derelict, into multi-use workspaces. According to the planning application, "The aim is to create a place to work that is like a village community for small businesses in the Glastonbury and Street areas and the wider Somerset. People would be able to work flexibly in a hybrid way, with shared spaces that allow easy interaction with each other."
The two buildings that could be transformed are the Bailys West Building which was the old tannery and rug factory, and the Bailys East Building which is the old glove factory and engine house.
Also submitted, is an application related to the plans for Tor Leisure Centre. The application is asking for permission to demolish part of building and replace with a single storey side extension, fenestration, doors and associated internal/external works.
The proposed works will consist of:
- Building of a 1.5-storey extension of the existing clubhouse building at Tor Leisure Centre to create a new multi-use sports hall, (12m x 14m) comprising of 42.2m2 of additional floorspace;
- Demolition of part of existing clubhouse building at Tor Sport and Leisure Centre;
- Separate storage room for studio/hall;
- Gym space (to accommodate 20 persons);
- Changing Rooms, toilets & showers;
- Social area with bar and separate kitchen/kitchenette area;
- Remodelled external works footway to main entrance/reception space with a café;
- Meeting room/office for 1 person;
- Three Treatment rooms; and
- Demolition of internal walls and doors to enable refurbishment works.
