Mendip District Council sweeper teams have collected a record number of rubbish as part of its Greener Cleaner initiative.

Teams in sweeping machines, have been busy cleaning up our district in the past few months, and collected over 1000 tonnes of waste from our streets - that's the equivalent weight of 148 elephants!

The investment in the new street sweepers has enabled teams to collect, on average, an additional 125 tonnes of debris every month.

The Greener Cleaner initiative is one of the Council's corporate priorities and consists of a number of actions which aims to protect and enhance our environment.

Cllr Heather Shearer, Portfolio Holder for Community Health & Services, said: "I'm so impressed with our sweeper teams for removing 1000 tonnes of debris from across this district.

"We declared a Climate and Ecological Emergency in 2019 and made a commitment to take care of the environment, leaving it in a good condition for generations to come.

"The Greener Cleaner initiative and work of the sweeper machines, demonstrate that commitment and have made a massive impact in enhancing our environment for the benefit of our residents and visitors."
