Mendip District Council is hosting climate action events for residents to learn, discuss and share ideas on how to tackle climate change together.

The council is seeking feedback and engagement from Glastonbury people to help steer the future direction of the district's climate emergency work.

The two evening events planned for Frome and Wells will include a presentation about why the council has declared a climate emergency and how it is planning to respond to it.

A number of organisations and groups - including Somerset Waste Partnership, the Centre for Sustainable Energy, IDDEA, Sustrans, the NFU, Sustainable Frome and Sustainable Wells – will be stallholders at the events, providing residents with information and advice on a range of topics from recycling to solar panels.

Mendip District Council has identified climate change as one of its top three priorities to focus on. It declared a climate emergency in February last year and is taking steps to becoming carbon neutral by 2030.

Mendip also recently published a report on the district's carbon footprint which found that:

  • 25 per cent of emissions come from energy used to heat and power our homes
  • 34 per cent of our carbon footprint is from transport
  • The average carbon footprint in Mendip is eight tonnes of carbon per person (this doesn't include carbon embodied in the goods and services we buy)

Cllr Tom Ronan, portfolio holder for strategic policy and climate change, said: "These events will provide an excellent opportunity to share our climate emergency plans with the public and enable Mendip residents to have their say."

The drop-ins events are taking place tonight (Tuesday March 3) in Frome Town Hall, and Thursda March 19 in Wells Town Hall, from 6pm to 9pm.

If you are unable to attend you can view Mendip's climate emergency plans by clicking on the red button below. You can complete the survey at the bottom of the page to submit your feedback on the plans.
