This month, the community gears up to pay tribute to one of its cherished members, Dennis 'Sapper' Stone, who passed away last month at 88.

Stone was known as a driving instructor and the passionate force behind the Vale of Avalon Vintage and Classic Vehicle Road Run.

'Sapper', as he was fondly known, began his life in Beckery, Glastonbury, where he took on an apprenticeship with E. G. Wright as a carpenter, following his local schooling.

His path took a detour when he served his National Service in Malaya with the Royal Engineers. His bravery and diligence earned him the title 'Sapper' and a promotion to corporal.

Post his service, 'Sapper' returned to Glastonbury and his work at E. G. Wright. Around this time, he married Daphne Richards and the couple, sharing a love for driving, went on to create their own driving school, The Avon School of Motoring.

However, Dennis and Daphne's shared interest wasn't limited to teaching driving. They were ardent fans of vintage vehicles, which led them to establish the Vale of Avalon Vintage and Classic Vehicle Road Run.

Beyond being a showcase of timeless automobiles, the event served as a charity fundraiser, gathering thousands of pounds over the years.

After Daphne's passing, Dennis managed the event until age and health constraints forced him to step back. His peacefully passed away at his home on June 5.

To honour his memory and his significant role in enriching the local car rally scene, a memorial tea party and rally have been scheduled at Glastonbury Rugby Club on July 29.

The event, from 4.40pm to 7.30pm, will remember 'Sapper' in the best way possible - a grand celebration of life. Meanwhile, a private interment of Dennis's ashes alongside Daphne's will also take place.
