Street mourns the loss of Philip John Eavis, a key figure in the town's business community, who passed away on 14th June 2024 at the age of 85.
Philip, along with his wife Gill, ran Living Homes, which has been a cornerstone of the local economy for decades.
Philip Eavis significantly contributed to the local community through his various roles. He served as chairman of Somerset's Education Committee, chairman of Collaboration Amongst Small Schools (C.A.S.S.), chairman of Whitstone Community School Governors, governor of Strode College, and chairman of the Peat Board. His dedication to education and public service has left a lasting impact on the region.
He leaves behind his wife Gill, their four children—Sarah, Paul, Joe, and Ben—and his grandchildren Jack, Thom, Hannah, Ollie, Lara, Jemima, Izzy, Leo, and Olivia.
Living Homes started as a mail order catalogue business in 1965, initially known as Selective Buyers. The company rebranded to Consumer Buyers in 1968 before transitioning to retail. The first Living Homes store opened in Kingsmead Square, Bath, in 1970, followed by a store in Weston-super-Mare in 1972. The major turning point came in the mid-1970s with the purchase and renovation of a derelict ex-school building in Street, which opened as a new store in 1977.
The success of the Street store led to further expansion, including dedicated showrooms for furniture, bedrooms, electrical, and flooring products.
Philip's contributions to the local business community and his impact on Street will be remembered fondly. His legacy of service and dedication continues to inspire those who knew him.
