How to apply for your child's 2024 Somerset school place: a comprehensive guide to secure your spot on time

Parents and guardians in Somerset with children poised to either begin or transition to a new school in September 2024 are urged to submit their online applications promptly.

If your child is set to enter a Secondary or Upper School, the application portal is already open. On the other hand, applications for those starting school for the first time or advancing to Junior or Middle School open on 25 September 2023.

For Secondary and Upper School admissions:

The application portal is open from now until 31 October 2023. For more details, visit Somerset's official application website.

For new starters:

The application process begins on 25 September and runs through 15 January 2024. Before applying, it's advisable to consult the Primary Admissions Guide available on Somerset's official website.

For school readiness tips, parents and guardians can consult resources available on www.cypsomersethealth.org. Information about free early education is also available on Somerset's official website.

For Junior and Middle School admissions:

Application windows are open from 25 September until 15 January. Visit Somerset's official website to apply.

For those without internet access, Somerset Council's customer service can be reached at 0300 123 2224.

While reminders will be sent out as deadlines approach, parents and guardians are ultimately responsible for timely submissions. Up to three school preferences can be listed on applications. The results will be communicated via email on 1 March 2024, known as National Offer Day.

Cllr Tessa Munt, the Lead Executive Member for Children, Families and Education at Somerset Council, encourages parents to act swiftly.

"I encourage every parent and carer to put their three choices of school in as soon as they can before the deadline date and include their catchment area school. Every child can flourish and mature with a good education so parents should go online, follow the correct link, and make an application right away," she said.

"Don't forget to check for open days and visit your local schools to make the right choice for your child."

Last year's statistics are encouraging: Nearly 99% of the 5,182 Somerset children entering primary school got one of their top three choices. The figures were similar for secondary school placements, with 98.11% of 4,786 students receiving one of their top preferences.
