Crowds gathered in Glastonbury yesterday (Sunday, September 11) to witness history in the making as Charles III was proclaimed King.

Young and old assembled outside the Town Hall, alongside Town Councillors, council officials and representative of the Crown, Deputy Lieutenant Mrs Jane Sedgman JP, as the Glastonbury Town Crier, David Greenway, delivered the official proclamation of accession followed by a piece of music by the Town's Official Bagpiper, Craig MacFarlane.

A spokesman for Glastonbury Town Council said: "Thank you to the Town Crier David Greenway, Glastonbury's Bagpiper Craig MacFarlane and Drummer Lydia Lyte for making the event incredibly poignant.

"Thank you also to our Neighbourhood Policing Team who were pivotal in ensuring there was space for members of the public who joined us, by halting traffic for the short duration of the proclamation, National Anthem and three cheers.

"The Town Council also thank St John's Church, St Mary's Church, Gorsedh Ynys Witrin and Glastonbury Abbey for sending representatives to join the Macebearers, Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Clerk, Councillors, Honourary Aldermen and Town Council Officers at the proclamation."

Glastonbury Town Council will still hold the Full Council Meeting on Tuesday (September 13). However this will be only to hold the two minute silence in memory of Her Majesty and to light the Unity Candle. No public participation will take place nor will any business be transacted, it will be postponed until October. Members of the community who wish to mark the death of Her Majesty with Councillors are most welcome to attend.
