Glastonbury residents are being urged to speak up about whether the town should bid for World Heritage Site status — with a public consultation day set for Saturday 24 May 2025.

The event, hosted by Glastonbury Town Council, will run from 10am to 4.15pm in the Council Chamber at the Town Hall and aims to give locals a chance to ask questions, raise concerns, and help shape the town's future.

It comes amid growing debate over the idea, with some saying official recognition would protect Glastonbury's unique heritage and bring in investment, while others worry it could lead to overdevelopment or compromise the town's identity.

Throughout the day, there will be five 45-minute sessions — at 10.30am, 12pm, 1.30pm, 2.30pm and 3.30pm — where people can hear from councillors, members of the World Heritage Working Group, and experts about what World Heritage status would mean, how the process works, what it might cost, and who would foot the bill.

But the council has been clear: the town won't move forward without local backing.

"This is about the people of Glastonbury," a spokesperson said. "We won't be pursuing World Heritage status unless the community supports it."

Spaces for the sessions can be booked by emailing Sarah Marks at [email protected] or calling 01458 831769.
