Glastonbury’s Knights in running for UK’s best takeaway
By Laura Linham 27th Oct 2026
Glastonbury's Knights Fish Restaurant is competing for the title of Britain's best fish and chip takeaway after reaching the final 20 in a national awards competition. It is the only Somerset business still in the running for Takeaway of the Year at the National Fish & Chip Awards 2027.
The shortlist has been cut from 40 businesses, with Knights now facing another round of scrutiny before the final ten are announced in December. The winner will be revealed at London's Park Plaza Westminster Bridge on 24 February.
Judges will examine product knowledge, sourcing, preparation, food hygiene and customer service. They will also assess how the businesses represent the fish and chip industry.
The awards are organised by the National Federation of Fish Friers and are free to enter. Next year's competition will be their 39th edition.
Federation president Andrew Crook said: "Whittling down the longlist of 40 to our Takeaway of the Year top 20 has been a very difficult task. Every one of them brings their own unique qualities, strengths and something extra special to the table.
"The judging process is incredibly detailed and appraises every element of what makes an exceptional fish and chip business. To deliver across all these areas to the standard demonstrated by these chippies deserves to be shouted about. They should all be immensely proud of what they have achieved and we're calling on communities to keep supporting small independent businesses.
"All those who make it through each stage of the competition are setting the benchmark for what can be achieved through passion, commitment and the determination to do things to the highest possible standards. They are helping to pass the baton of excellence to the next generation and setting the standard for others to follow.
"Our top 20 are inspiring examples of that in action, and we very much look forward to celebrating their achievements as we progress through the competition and on to the next round."
Knights faces competition from takeaways across England, Scotland and Wales, including Bristol's Jolly Fryer and Somewhere Else Fishy in Sherborne. Organisers have published an interactive map of the 20 semi-finalists, with the next judging round deciding which businesses progress to the final ten.
