Plans to combat homelessness through a new modular home project at St. Edmunds Community Hall has hit a snag, when it was recommended for refusal by Glastonbury Town Council.
The proposal for the modular home initiative in Glastonbury was drawn up by the homeless charity, Julian House and aims to address the significant rise in homelessness within the Mendip area, exacerbated by the current cost of living crisis.
The project involves creating four modular homes in the St. Edmund's Hall car park, designed as transitional housing to assist people in moving from street homelessness to more stable living situations.
The homes are meant to serve as 'move-on' or 'step down' accommodations with a focus on stays of six months to two years.
The selection process for residents will prioritize those with local connections, a commitment to sobriety, and an eagerness to engage in work, education, or volunteering, aiming to fill the service gap left by current support services at full capacity.
But the project has failed to receive the town council's backing after the town council voiced concerns including the potential negative impact on the amenity of nearby properties, incompatibility with existing uses of the site, and the possibility of exacerbating traffic issues by reducing available parking for the hall.
However, the final decision on whether the project proceeds lies not with the town council but with Somerset Council, who will decide on the application later this year.
