Glastonbury to honour wizard Ray ‘Merlin’ Rutter
By Laura Linham 20th Mar 2026
A special event in memory of Glastonbury wizard Ray 'Merlin' Rutter is set to take place in the town next month.
A magic street performance will be held at the Glastonbury Monument at Market Cross from 2pm on Sunday, 26 April 2026, as the community comes together to remember one of Glastonbury's most recognisable figures.
The event will feature Mario Morris, the Bardic Magician, and the Glastonbury Dragon Drummers.
It has been organised as a tribute to Ray, who died in February last year aged 77.
Many in Glastonbury knew Ray for his striking blue robes and his regular chats with residents and visitors in the town centre.
Organisers said he was remembered for bringing "a little magic to everyday life" and said he remained deeply missed by the community.
They are inviting people to attend in wizard robes and hats to mark the occasion and share what they called "a magical moment together".
Ray became a familiar and much-loved sight in Glastonbury, where he was widely known as Merlin and was often seen stopping to talk, tell stories and offer rune readings.
The organisers said the tribute had been arranged by the Glastonbury community, with volunteers and performers giving their time to help stage the event.
