Glastonbury pupils need final £10k for dream sports pitch
By Laura Linham 28th May 2026
A Glastonbury primary school is asking local people to help give its children a safe place to play, train and enjoy sport all year round.
St Benedict's Junior School needs to raise the final £10,000 for a new all-weather sports pitch.
The school has already secured around £40,000 through fundraising, grants, donations and school funds.
But it needs one last push from the Glastonbury community to reach the £50,000 target and get the project over the line.
The current pitch sits alongside the school's main field.
It has been used for years for football, PE lessons, breaktimes and after-school activities.
But staff say the surface is now too small and deteriorating, leaving it no longer fit for purpose.
The replacement would give pupils a larger, modern all-weather space that can be used throughout the year, including during Somerset's wetter months when grass areas can become waterlogged.
Head teacher Pier Ranger said the pitch is not a luxury, but an essential part of school life.
He said: "We are so passionate about sport and physical activity at St Benedict's.
"Every day we see the impact it has on physical and mental wellbeing, and the joy and success it brings our pupils.
"Many of our families do not have access to play spaces outside of school, so this space is essential to our year-round sports and play offer."
The school says the new pitch would make a difference every day.
It would support PE lessons, breaktimes, after-school clubs and football training.
It would also give pupils a dependable outdoor space when the weather makes other parts of the school site difficult to use.
Both the boys' and girls' football teams already train on the existing pitch.
Both teams have reached county finals for the last four years in a row.
The boys' team were also county champions in 2024-25.
Staff hope the new pitch can be installed later this year if the remaining money can be raised.
Now the school is asking residents, local businesses, sponsors and benefactors in Glastonbury and the surrounding area to consider stepping in.
Any donation, introduction to a sponsor, or offer of help could move the project closer to becoming reality.
The school hopes the final £10,000 will turn a worn-out space into a long-term facility for current pupils and future generations.
Anyone who may be able to help is asked to contact St Benedict's Junior School on 01458 831811.
