Glastonbury care home wins dementia care award

Brunelcare's Glastonbury Care Home has achieved Two Star Gold Accreditation for its dementia care.

The home received the award through the National Dementia Care Accreditation Scheme, known as NaDCAS, after scoring 85% overall. The scheme is a national framework used to assess and support dementia care standards.

The accreditation recognised the Pike Close home's work to provide person-centred care for residents living with dementia. Assessors highlighted the home's approach to wellbeing, independence and dignity.

Glastonbury Care Home scored particularly highly for its environment, achieving 96% for its "Enabling Environment". The assessment recognised work to create a welcoming, accessible and dementia-friendly setting.

The home also scored 90% for "Information About the Person", reflecting the team's focus on residents' preferences, interests, life histories and personal details. The assessment highlighted the use of one-page profiles for residents, giving staff more information to support individual care.

The home's move towards a more focused household model across its four communities was also recognised. Assessors found the change had helped create a more stable care dynamic for residents and supported staff to work more effectively together.

The quality of interactions between residents and team members was another strength picked out in the report. One assessment standard received an Exceptional rating, with assessors noting regular examples of positive, compassionate contact.

Glastonbury Care Home also scored 95% for "The Senses for Wellbeing". That part of the assessment looked at areas including lighting, sensory comfort, calm surroundings and the wider physical environment for people living with dementia.

Care Home Manager Nisha Binumon said: "I am incredibly proud of this accreditation and, most importantly, of the team behind it. Achieving Two Star Gold is a fantastic recognition of the care, compassion and commitment that our team brings to Glastonbury every day.

"It reflects the hard work that has gone into understanding each resident as an individual, strengthening the way we work together and creating an environment where people living with dementia can feel comfortable, supported and valued."

Brunelcare said the accreditation marks both a milestone and a commitment to further improvement. The charity said Glastonbury Care Home will continue working to develop its dementia care for residents.
