Glastonbury Abbey is gearing up to launch its first-ever Run the Ruins: Longest Day 10k on Sunday, June 22, 2025.

Set against the backdrop of the historic 36-acre grounds, the early morning event will offer runners a unique opportunity to race through the iconic abbey ruins, blending scenic views with a challenging route.

The course promises to be more than just a picturesque run. Participants will tackle a mix of perfectly manicured lawns, rugged uneven ground, and loose gravel paths, adding an element of unpredictability. With sections designed for quick overtaking, short sharp ascents, and narrow single-track paths through the woods, runners will have to stay on their toes. Adding to the drama, the route includes two sprint sections—100 and 200 metres—where runners can vie for the title of King or Queen of the sprints.

Organisers say the event is perfect for competitive runners and those looking to push their personal bests, but the day will also cater to fun runners, with a non-competitive 10k following the main race. For those looking for a shorter challenge, a 5k race and a non-competitive 5k run will be held, along with a one-mile course for beginners and families.

Participants are also encouraged to use the event to raise money for the Glastonbury Abbey charity, which helps to maintain and preserve the historic site for future generations. To find out more about sponsorship opportunities, runners can contact the organisers via [email protected].

How to get involved

Tickets for Run the Ruins: Longest Day 10k go live on October 5, with prices ranging from £11 to £22 depending on the race. There will be a limited number of places available, so runners are urged to register their interest early to secure a spot. Minimum age requirements will apply based on the chosen race distance.

With its unique course and historic setting, the event is expected to draw runners from across the region for a day of challenging fun and community spirit. For more information or to register your interest, visit the Glastonbury Abbey website.
