A part of Glastonbury Abbey's estate that is not normally open to the public will welcome visitors for free guided tours later this month.

Abbey House will take part in Heritage Open Days on Saturday, 19 and Sunday, 20 September, giving people the chance to explore the historic property and learn more about those who have lived and worked there.

Tours will run every hour on the hour from 10 am to 4 pm across both days, with each one lasting around 45 minutes.

Visitors will be shown around the 19th-century house, learn about its various inhabitants and discover some of the hidden features within the building.

There will also be time to visit an exhibition about the history of Abbey House and watch a costumed gardener demonstrating Victorian tool-repair skills.

Refreshments will be available, with views across the Glastonbury Abbey ruins adding a fairly impressive backdrop to the tea break.

Abbey House overlooks the abbey site and was built as a gentleman's residence in the 1820s. Over the years it has been associated with several families and later used as a retreat house for the local diocese.

The weekend forms part of Heritage Open Days, the national festival which gives people free access to historic buildings, places and events around the country.

A separate free evening talk will also take place at Abbey House on Saturday, 19 September at 7 pm.

Francis Thyer and Nic Phillips will present The People of Abbey House, looking at the everyday lives of those connected with the building from its construction by the Reeves-Porches family and its later extension by the Austin family through to its use as a retreat house.

Admission to the talk is free, although booking is essential.

Entry to Abbey House is from Chilkwell Street, BA6 8DH, rather than through the main Glastonbury Abbey entrance. Disabled parking is available at the house, with the nearest public car park at Silver Street.

The free tours take place at 10 am, 11 am, noon, 1 pm, 2 pm, 3 pm and 4 pm on both Saturday and Sunday.
