Police are investigating an arson attack after a prominent building in Street was damaged over the weekend.

The fire, at the former Library building on Leigh Road, originated from a lit canister located within the site's portable toilet, leading to the destruction of the unit.

The blaze also damaged a wall of the building and a new bench.

The incident prompted a swift response from local fire services and police. Despite the material damage, it has been confirmed that there were no personal injuries associated with the event.

Authorities have now cordoned off the affected area for safety and further investigation.

Avon and Somerset Police have launched an investigation and is appealing for anyone who may have information that could help identify the culprits.

"It was extremely fortunate that no-one was hurt and the building was not badly damaged," a spokesman said.

"We're now asking the public to assist us with any information that will help us identify those involved. This could be CCTV, doorbell or dash cam footage. We would also be keen to hear from anyone who has noticed a person's clothes that smell distinctly of smoke."

Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the police at 101, citing reference number AS-20230513-0845.
