Plans have been approved to raise the height of the forecourt canopy at the Esso garage in Glastonbury, to stop it getting damaged by large vehicles.

A planning application for the raising of the forecourt canopy from 4.1m to 5.1m at Wirral Park Service Station, Wirral Park Road, Glastonbury, was submitted by Motor Fuel Group Ltd.

In its application, the group said that at the present height, the canopy is vulnerable to impact damage and has been repaired on many occasions.

The need to remove the ongoing risk of damage and subsequent loss of business by raising the height of the canopy, was the reason for this application.

The process will involve lifting the canopy top by cranes and inserting extension legs into the columns.

In approving the plans, the planning officer's report said: "The application would support the expansion of an enterprise within principle settlement, the expansion is of a manner appropriate to scale and locality, and will support the local economy."
