A flood alert has been issued by the Environment Agency for the Rivers Sheppey, Brue, Glastonbury Mill Stream and North and South Drains.

River levels on the River Sheppey have begun to rise as a result of heavy localised thunderstorms.

Thunderstorm activity is forecast to continue throughout this afternoon (Sunday August 11) across the East Somerset areas.

Flooding of roads and any low lying land is possible during this afternoon and early evening, according to the agency.

A spokesperson said: "We believe there is a low possibility of flooding to low lying land and roads and especially to land adjacent to the River Sheppey.

"Once the localised heavy thunderstorms have passed through the area lighter showery conditions will persist overnight and into tomorrow (Monday August 12).

"In conjunction with the Met Office we are closely monitoring the forecast thunderstorm activity. Our incident response staff are checking local defences and trash screens for blockages."
