The Environment Agency has issued a flood alert for a number of rivers, including the River Brue, with warnings that a road out of Glastonbury could be flooded.

The Be Prepared alert has been issued for the Rivers Brue, Sheppey, Glastonbury Millstream and North and South Drains.

River levels have risen at the Lovington river gauge as a result of persistent rainfall. Consequently, flooding of roads and farmland is possible today (October 13).

A spokesperson for the agency said: "We believe there is a possibility of flooding for the B3151 Glastonbury to Meare Road.

"Overtopping is forecast from the Glastonbury Millstream and the River Brue at North Drain and Westhay.

"The River Brue is forecast to be bankfull upstream of Bruton Dam with field flooding likely. Flooding of properties is not forecast at this point.

"River levels can rise very quickly in response to heavy rainfall. We are closely monitoring the situation.

"Our incident response staff are checking defences. Please stay aware in case further warnings are issued."
