The Met Office has issued a second warning for snow in Somerset from midnight tonight through to 11.59pm tomorrow.

Somerset has been issued with a second weather warning for snow and ice as temperatures are set to plummet across the county.

The first warning - for snow and ice - came into force at 9pm yesterday (March 6) and is due to deactivate at 10am. But now the Met Office has issued a second yellow warning for snow from midnight tonight through to 11.59pm tomorrow.

A period of snow will likely hit the county by early evening tomorrow and is expected to cause travel disruption.

Here's what you can expect:

  • Taunton is set for "feels like" temperatures below 0C for most of tomorrow. Sleet is expected to arrive at 5pm before turning into heavy snow at 7pm.
  • In Bath snow flurries are expected from around 5pm. The heavy snow is forecast to arrive at 7pm, lasting until 10pm.
  • Wells should see slightly lighter snow following a period of sleet at 6pm.
  • In Yeovil, heavy snow will arrive at 6pm before easing by 10pm.
  • Frome could see heavy snow between 6pm and 9pm. It will then ease into light snow before stopping completely by 11pm.

Help the gritters to help you

Ahead of the warning, National Highways reminds motorists to give extra time and space to the fleet of gritting lorries who will be out and about trying to keep everyone moving.

Darren Clark, Severe Weather Resilience Manager at National Highways, said: "As our gritting teams go out to spread salt on the roads, our message is simple to all road users: "Please be patient and give us the time and space to do what we need to do to keep you safe."

"If you are going to pass us, please do so courteously, pass us safely and legally, or even better, if you are able to stay back, you will actually help the salt on the road activate even more quickly by crushing and breaking it into the road surface which benefits everyone."

"We are once again committed to working around the clock on these seasonal operations to keep all road users safe and thank everyone in advance for their patience and understanding."

A list of all the warm spaces in Somerset

Staying safe and warm

There's been a distinct drop in temperature, which is expected to continue for the next few days.

With many people struggling with the cost-of-living crisis and soaring energy bills, the cold weather are increased health risks to vulnerable people.

Dr Agostinho Sousa, consultant in public health medicine at the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), said older people and those with heart or lung conditions are particularly at risk from the cold weather, adding: "If you have a pre-existing medical condition, you should heat your home to a temperature that is comfortable for you.

"In rooms you mostly use, such as the living room or bedroom, try to heat them to at least 18C if you can. Keep your bedroom windows closed at night. Wearing several layers of clothing will keep you warmer than one thicker layer."

Somerset residents who are struggling to keep warm during the winter can now access a 'warm welcome space' in their local area. The network, dubbed the Warm Welcome initiative, allows people to participate in activities, get work or homework done, or just meet other people for a chat.

Somerset County Council as now published a full list of the venues, which includes every library in Somerset along with a number of churches, village halls and cafés.

Each of the 70 locations selected have signed up to the 'Warm Welcome Charter', comprising the following five core principles:

  1. You'll get a Warm Welcome as well as a warm space
  2. Everyone is treated equally, with dignity and respect
  3. Our Warm Welcome will be a safe space
  4. We will not tell anyone about you visiting a Warm Welcome
  5. It doesn't matter why you need a Warm Welcome
