Work is set to start soon on the construction of new homes in Glastonbury after Elan Homes confirmed they have bought land in the town.

The site, which is nearly five acres in size and is located off Old Wells Road, has reserved matters planning approval for 60 new homes.

There will be 42 homes available for private sale, offering a mix of two to five-bedroom homes including terraced, semi-detached and detached designs.

Elan will also build 18 affordable homes, providing one, two and three-bedroom terraced and semi-detached properties.

David Summers, regional managing director from Elan Homes (Midlands), said: "Having completed the acquisition of land in Glastonbury, we're looking forward to starting construction work on site to deliver much-needed new homes.

"Our scheme will help address the housing shortage in the area by providing open market homes of a size that are in high demand in the district, while also contributing to meeting government targets and aiding Mendip District Council in delivering affordable homes."

Recreational open space, including a children's play area, will form part of the development, with Elan contributing almost £63,000 towards open space provision.

The first homes at the site, which has been named Avalon, are due to be released for sale in mid to late 2021.
