Glastonbury is preparing for an event like no other this autumn, as the town gears up for the Glastonbury Dragons Wild Hunt event on Saturday, 21 October 2023.
The day promises to be filled with mythology, music, and ceremony, starting at 2:00 pm with Morris dancing around the Market Cross. The performance will feature various Morris troupes including Glastonbury Border Morris, Enigma Morris, Wild Moon Morris, and Somerstep Morris.
If you're planning on driving through the area, take note that the road closure won't start until 3:30 pm.
The day continues to unfold with a grand parade known as 'The Horde', which will start at 3:50 pm and move down the High Street towards the Market Cross, arriving by 4:20 pm.
Gwyn Ap Nudd and the Glastonbury Dragons, accompanied by the rhythm of the Glastonbury Dragon Drummers, will also make their way from the top of the High Street to join the gathering at the Market Cross. Once there, one of the event's highlights will take place—a mythical battle between the Glastonbury Red and White Dragons to determine the ruling season. It's a spectacle that begs the question: which dragon will emerge victorious, red or white?
At 4:45 pm, attendees are invited to join a procession from the Market Cross to Tor Sports and Leisure Field on Benedict Street. The Drummers of Avalon will be holding the space, setting the atmosphere for what promises to be an evocative ceremony. The ceremony itself will begin at 5:20 pm and attendees will be given the opportunity to honour their ancestors. Pens and paper will be passed around for participants to write notes to be added to the fire pit by ceremonialists.
The ceremony will feature a rich variety of performances and rituals, including speeches from Gwyn Ap Nudd and performances by the Horde, Glastonbury Border Morris, Una Belly Dancing, Wild Moon Morris, and Fire Belly Dancing. Bards and Druids will also be in attendance, along with more drumming by the Drummers of Avalon. The event will conclude at 7:20 pm.
