Glastonbury High Street was closed for several hours after a double decker bus ploughed into a shop on the High Street on Thursday (July 23) morning.

The bus hit Emajon, and the flat above.

Emergency services were called to reports of a bus hitting the building at around 11am..

A spokesman from Avon and Somerset Police said: "The High Street is closed at its junctions with Victoria Buildings and Lambrook Street while emergency services deal with the incident.

"Ambulance crews assessed the driver, who was taken to hospital. We're not aware of any other reported injuries.

"The closure will remain in place while assessment of the damage to the building and its structural safety is carried out. Recovery work on the bus has been completed."

It is not thought that the driver's injuries were life-threatening or life-changing.

Two fire appliances attended, and the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue service confirmed that they did not have to rescue anyone from the bus, but made sure that the vehicle and building were in a safe condition while the bus was recovered.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that the accident happened when the driver of the bus was taken ill.

A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) said: "We were called at 10:49hrs to an incident in Glastonbury. We sent an air ambulance and two double-crewed land ambulances and conveyed one patient by land ambulance to Yeovil District Hospital."

We are awaiting more details from First bus.
