Street Fire Station is recruiting for on-call fire fighters.

On-call firefighters are a vital part of the emergency service, making up 90 per cent of emergency cover in the UK.

On-call firefighters come from a variety of backgrounds – they could be self-employed, full time parents, trades people, administrators or shopkeepers all with a common interest to support and keep their community safe.

By becoming an on-call firefighter You will be providing a part time service, responding to fire and emergency calls in the same way as wholetime firefighters. Incidents can range from attending fires, floods, road traffic accidents, chemical spills, and talking to your community about fire prevention.

Firefighters may be called out a couple of times a week for one or two hours during the day, evenings or weekend.

You don't need any previous experience as a firefighter or existing qualifications but you must be:

  • aged 18 or over
  • able to respond from home/work within five minutes
  • physically fit and able to pass a bleep test 8.8 level over 20m
  • medically fit with good eyesight and hearing (find out more about the eyesight standards)
  • prepared for the commitment and discipline of being a Firefighter
  • preferably hold a full UK driving licence

On-call firefighters are paid by the hour for each hour they commit to be available. Depending on their personal circumstances, individuals can choose to be available for anywhere between 30 and 120 hours a week This provides a great deal of flexibility on the hours firefighters need to commit to and gives them a better work-life balance.

Your contract will be based on the number of hours you choose to commit. You will be paid an hourly rate for every hour you are available on-call depending on the time of day. Hours between 8am and 6pm on any day of the week attract a higher rate of pay

For example, a competent firefighter available for 100 hours a week (40 hours between 8am and 6pm, and 60 hours between 6pm and 8am) will be paid £203.40 a week.
