DIAMOND WEDDING CELEBRATIONS FOR PAT AND PETE
By Katherine Simpkins 26th Oct 2026
A couple who postponed their 1966 wedding to avoid it clashing with England playing in the World Cup, have just celebrated their Diamond Anniversary, marking 60 years of marriage at St Benedicts Nursing Home in Glastonbury.
Pat Dalgarno, who now lives at St Benedicts, was just 17 when the couple wed at the registry office in Wells.
Pete Dalgarno, then 21 and now 81, said: "Even after we'd postponed our big day, it wasn't plain sailing.
"I got the registry office and realised I didn't have the ring with me, so I had to quickly run into the jewellers and pick up a ring.
"But we got there in the end, and I'm so thankful that we did. We've had a wonderful marriage."
Pete, who was born and bred in Street, worked for Dairy Crest until his retirement, while Pat, from nearby Butleigh Wootton, spent 33 years at Street's Millfield School as a housekeeper.
The couple have two sons, six grandchildren, and four great grandchildren, who all live locally.
Pat, who is now living with advanced dementia, was initially supported at St Cecilia Care Home in Shepton Mallet, relocating this year to St Benedicts which is a nursing home.
Pat and Pete have shared a lifelong passion for gardening, spending many hours together in the large garden at their home in Street as well as tending their allotment, before Pat's condition prevented her from continuing.
Pete Dalgarno said: "We used to be pottering around in the garden all the time, and also loved going out in the car and visiting big gardens like at Longleat which were great for getting ideas.
"We'd always done everything together, so it was very hard when Pat was first diagnosed, but the team at St Bens, and before that at St Cecilia, have been fantastic.
"And we were both really delighted with the beautiful cake the home surprised us with to mark our Diamond Wedding.
"It gives me peace of mind knowing how well my darling Pat is looked after at St Bens."
